It’s just as effective as store-bought Jif (Cif), but without harsh chemicals or synthetic fragrances.
Why Make Your Own?
This gentle cleaner harnesses baking soda’s mild abrasiveness, castile soap’s degreasing power, and optional essential oils for freshness.
It’s safe for most household surfaces, kind to your hands, and easy to whip up in minutes.
Ingredients
- -1 cup baking soda
- -2–3 tablespoons liquid castile soap (or 1/2-1 teaspoon if using dish soap)
- -1 tablespoon water (adjust as needed for texture)
- -5–10 drops essential oil (optional — lemon, tea tree, or eucalyptus work well)
Optional add-ins for tough jobs:
- -1 teaspoon washing soda – for extra degreasing — avoid on delicate surfaces.
- -1 teaspoon hydrogen peroxide 3% – for whitening — especially in bathrooms. (It should never be mixed with vinegar!)
Method
- In a bowl, mix the baking soda and castile soap until it forms a thick paste.
- Add water a little at a time, until the mixture has a creamy consistency.
- Stir in the essential oils, if using.
- Spoon into a clean glass jar or squeeze bottle and seal with a lid.
How to Use
Scoop a small amount onto a damp sponge or cloth and scrub the surface.
For stubborn stains, leave it to sit for 5–10 minutes before rinsing and wiping dry.
Works well on sinks, taps, tiles, stovetops, and more.
Tips for Storage & Utensils
- Store your cleaner in a cool place, sealed. It keeps well for 3-5 weeks.
- Use a clean, dry wooden or silicone spoon to scoop — but don’t leave it in the jar as wood can become soggy over time.
- For longevity, a small ceramic or silicone spatula works beautifully and doesn’t absorb moisture.
That’s it — a simple, effective alternative to chemical-laden creams, ready to keep your home shining naturally.
